The Clarence W. Avery records series consists of five subseries. The Building Construction and Maintenance records subseries, 1916-1927 (2 cubic ft.), Acc. 680, contains correspondence, property diagrams, cost data, and construction details regarding building construction and factory production for Ford Motor Company plants throughout Michigan including Brooklyn, Dexter, Flat Rock, Highland Park, Iron Mountain, L'Anse, Nankin Mills, Northville, Pequaming, Phoenix, Plymouth, Rouge River, Waterford, and Ypsilanti. The records also include building construction and production detail covering plants in Cork, Ireland; Green Island, New York; Hamilton, Ohio; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Walkerville, Canada. The subseries includes cost details for various production processes for items such as batteries, bearings, cardboard, charcoal, artificial leather, paper, steel, tires, production tools, and workmen's shoes. The Factory Change Letters subseries, 1908-1921 (7.6 cubic ft.), Acc. 575, consists of technical correspondence between production and engineering staff detailing design, material, tooling, and production process changes affecting Model T cars and Model TT trucks. The Glass Production records subseries, 1919-1931 (4.8 cubic ft.), Acc. 457 and 679, includes financial records documenting building upgrades and equipment purchases after Ford Motor Company purchased the Allegheny Plate Glass Company as well as production cost records. The Lincoln Plant records subseries, 1926-1927 (0.4 cubic ft.), Acc. 814, includes cost and labor reports and correspondence detailing production of Lincoln automobiles. The Railroad Property records subseries, 1888-1891 (0.4 cubic ft.), Acc. 420, contains property records, rail layouts, and maps of rail lines around L'Anse, Michigan, that Ford Motor Company purchased.

Clarence Willard Avery was born in Dansville, Michigan in February 1882. After attending public schools, Ferris Institute, and the University of Michgian, he became teacher of manual training in several public schools. After a short stay in Ispheming, Michigan, he was named director of Manual Training at Detroit University School.
